Korean Green Onion Chicken
Serves Yield: 1-2 servings

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Chicken Breast (½ lb)
  • 1 Cup Green Onions
  • Cooking Oil For Deep Frying
  • Marinating Chicken Ingredients:

½ Tbsp Cooking Wine

  • 1 tsp Garlic, Minced
  • 2 Pinches Salt
  • 2 Pinches Black Pepper
  • Chicken Batter Ingredients:

⅓ Cup Cornstarch

  • 1 Egg White
  • 1 Tbsp Water
  • ½ Tbsp Korean Curry Powder

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1½ Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1½ Tbsp Water
  • 1 Generous Tbsp Sugar
  • 1 tsp Garlic, Minced
  • ½ tsp Vinegar
  • ¼ tsp Yellow Mustard

Directions

  1. First, cut 1 cup worth of green onions into about 2 inch long thin strips. You can also use garlic chives, perilla leaves, and even iceberg lettuce. Just cut them into thin strips.
  2. To get rid of the strong onion flavor and to make the onion curl, put the green onion strips into ice water. Set them aside for later.
  3. Now, cut 1 cup of chicken breast (½ lb) into half to one inch chunks. You can use any parts of chicken you like, but I recommend using chicken without skin and bone for this recipe.
  4. Add the chicken, ½ Tbsp cooking wine, 1 tsp minced garlic, 2 pinches of salt, and 2 pinches of black pepper in a bowl.
  5. Mix everything together and marinate it for at least 10 minutes.
  6. Add the 3 key ingredients along with 1 Tbsp of water into the chicken.
  7. Mix everything together. It is ready to deep fry now.

Preheat the cooking oil on medium-high.

  1. Put all the chicken in the heated oil one by one. Fry them for about 3 minutes.
  2. In this step, take out the green onions from the cold water and dry them out. You can see how the green onion strips became curly.
  3. 3 minutes later, the chicken will be lightly golden brown. Remove the chicken from the oil.
  4. And put them on a plate with some paper towels to soak up the excess oil.
  5. To make the deep fried chicken crispier, we will fry them one more time. So, put all the fried chicken pieces back into the hot oil and fry for 2 more minutes this time.
  6. 2 minutes later, the chicken will be nicely golden brown. Remove the chicken from the oil.

And then, put them on some new paper towels.

  1. Serve the chicken when it’s still hot. Put the fried chicken on a pretty plate.
  2. Then, put some of the green onions on top of the chicken.
  3. Right before eating, pour the sauce over the chicken and green onions. Mix everything together and enjoy!
  4. My husband thinks it is so delicious that I need to open a KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) restaurant. We all enjoyed it that much. Hehe, you can make this authentic and tasty Korean fried chicken at home using my recipe. Enjoy!
