Beans, Mexican Pinto (Refried), Canned

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. Dried pinto beans
  • 3/4 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp Ancho chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 5 Pint jars with lids and rings

Directions

Pick through beans removing any foreign debris

  1. Soak beans overnight in a large bowl with plenty of water

In the morning, drain and rinse the beans

  1. Put the beans in a large pot covered with water (about 2 inches above the beans)

Add spices and bring to a boil.

  1. Stir occasionally and watch constantly. They LOVE TO BOIL OVER

Once they reach a boil, turn off the heat.

  1. Ladle hot beans into jars leaving 1 inch headspace
  2. Top up with cooking broth but maintain 1 inch headspace
  3. Place lids and rings
  4. Process:
  5. Pints - 1 hour 15 minutes
  6. Quarts - 1 hour 30 minutes

Notes

3/4 pound of dries beans equals about 1 quart jar or 2 pint jars
